A Waveguide Probe Antenna is a common type of internal feed antenna, primarily used within metallic rectangular or circular waveguides at microwave frequencies. Its fundamental structure consists of a small metal probe (often cylindrical) inserted into the waveguide, oriented parallel to the electric field of the excited mode.
Its operating principle is based on electromagnetic induction: when the probe is excited by the inner conductor of a coaxial line, it generates electromagnetic waves within the waveguide. These waves propagate along the guide and are eventually radiated from an open end or slot. The probe’s position, length, and depth can be adjusted to control its impedance matching with the waveguide, thereby optimizing performance.
The key advantages of this antenna are its compact structure, ease of manufacture, and suitability as an efficient feed for parabolic reflector antennas. However, its operational bandwidth is relatively narrow. Waveguide probe antennas are widely used in radar, communication systems, and as feed elements for more complex antenna structures.
