A Sectoral Waveguide Horn Antenna is a type of high-frequency microwave antenna based on a waveguide structure. Its basic design consists of a rectangular waveguide section flared into a “horn”-shaped opening at one end. Depending on the plane of the flare, there are two main types: the E-plane sectoral horn (flared in the plane of the Electric field) and the H-plane sectoral horn (flared in the plane of the Magnetic field).
The primary operating principle of this antenna is to gradually transition the confined electromagnetic wave from the waveguide into free space via the flared opening. This provides effective impedance matching and minimizes reflection. Its key advantages include high directivity (narrow main lobe), relatively high gain, and a simple, robust structure.
Sectoral waveguide horn antennas are widely used in applications requiring controlled beam shaping. They are commonly employed as feed horns for reflector antennas, in microwave relay communication systems, and for testing and measuring other antennas and RF components.
