A log-periodic antenna is a unique broadband antenna whose electrical performance, such as impedance and radiation pattern, repeats periodically with the logarithm of the frequency. Its classic structure consists of a series of metal dipole elements of varying lengths, which are交叉-connected to a feeder line, forming a geometric pattern reminiscent of a fishbone.
Its operating principle relies on the “active region” concept. At a specific operating frequency, only a group of elements with lengths near half-wavelength are effectively excited and responsible for the primary radiation. As the frequency changes, this active region moves along the antenna’s structure, enabling its wideband performance.
The key advantage of this antenna is its very wide bandwidth, often reaching 10:1 or more, with stable performance across the band. Its main drawbacks are a relatively complex structure and moderate gain. It is widely used in television reception, full-band spectrum monitoring, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing, and communication systems requiring wideband operation.
