A slotted waveguide antenna is a high-gain traveling-wave antenna based on a waveguide structure. Its fundamental design involves cutting a series of slots according to a specific pattern in the wall of a rectangular waveguide. These slots interrupt the current flow on the inner wall of the waveguide, thereby radiating the electromagnetic energy propagating inside the guide into free space.
Its operating principle is as follows: as the electromagnetic wave travels along the waveguide, each slot acts as a radiating element. By precisely controlling the spacing, inclination, or offset of these slots, the radiation from all elements can be made to add up in phase in a specific direction, forming a sharp, highly directional pencil beam.
The key advantages of this antenna are its robust structure, high power-handling capacity, low loss, high efficiency, and ability to produce very clean radiation patterns. Its main drawbacks are a relatively narrow operating bandwidth and demanding manufacturing precision. It is widely used in radar systems (particularly phased array radar), microwave relay links, and missile guidance.
