A trihedral corner reflector is a passive device consisting of three mutually perpendicular metal plates, forming the interior corner of a cube. It is not an antenna itself, but a structure designed to strongly reflect electromagnetic waves, and is crucial in radar and measurement applications.
Its operating principle is based on multiple reflections. When an electromagnetic wave enters its aperture from a wide range of angles, it undergoes three successive reflections off the perpendicular surfaces. Due to geometry, the reflected wave is directed precisely back towards the source, parallel to the incident wave. This creates an extremely strong radar return signal.
The key advantages of this structure are its very high Radar Cross-Section (RCS), its insensitivity to a wide range of incident angles, and its simple, robust construction. Its main disadvantage is its relatively large physical size. It is widely used as a calibration target for radar systems, a deception target, and mounted on boats or vehicles to enhance their radar visibility for safety purposes.
