  • A straight waveguide is a uniform, straight section of hollow metal pipe, representing the most fundamental form of microwave transmission structure. It is not an antenna itself, but a transmission line designed to guide electromagnetic waves from one end to the other with minimal loss.

Its operating principle relies on the reflection and propagation of electromagnetic waves within the metallic boundaries. Specific modes of electromagnetic waves, such as the TE10 mode in rectangular waveguides, can propagate losslessly through the waveguide, provided the operating frequency is above the waveguide’s cutoff frequency. The cross-sectional shape (commonly rectangular or circular) determines its transmission characteristics and the supported modes.

The key advantages of this structure are its extremely low insertion loss, high power handling capacity, robust construction, and absence of radiation leakage. Its main drawbacks are the limited operating bandwidth constrained by specific modes and the increasing physical size as frequency decreases. Straight waveguides are widely used in radar systems, satellite communication feeders, microwave test and measurement setups, and as fundamental building blocks for more complex waveguide components such as couplers, filters, and antenna feeds.
