A Double Ridged Waveguide Probe Antenna is a broadband antenna that combines a double-ridged waveguide with a probe feed mechanism. It features parallel ridge-like protrusions on the top and bottom walls of a standard rectangular waveguide, which dramatically expands its operating bandwidth.
The operating principle is: the double-ridge structure lowers the cutoff frequency of the waveguide, enabling it to propagate electromagnetic waves over a much wider frequency range. Simultaneously, the probe acts as the exciter, converting the coaxial signal into the electromagnetic field within the waveguide. This combination allows the antenna to maintain good performance across multiple octaves, overcoming the narrow bandwidth limitation of traditional waveguide probe antennas.
Its key advantages are ultra-wideband characteristics, a relatively compact structure, and high power-handling capacity. However, its design and manufacturing are more complex, and it may have slightly higher loss than standard waveguides. It is widely used in Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing, wideband communications, spectrum monitoring, and radar systems.
