A conical horn antenna is a common type of microwave antenna. Its structure consists of a section of circular waveguide that gradually flares out to form a conical horn aperture. It is the circularly symmetric version of the pyramidal horn antenna.

Its working principle is to guide the electromagnetic waves propagating in the circular waveguide into free space through a smoothly transitioning horn structure. This gradual transition effectively achieves impedance matching between the waveguide and free space, reducing reflections and forming a directional radiation beam. Its radiation pattern is symmetrical around the axis.

The main advantages of this antenna are its symmetrical structure, the ability to produce a symmetrical pencil-shaped beam, and its suitability for exciting and supporting circularly polarized waves. Compared to other horn types, its design and manufacturing are relatively simple. The main disadvantage is that for the same aperture size, its gain is slightly lower than that of a pyramidal horn antenna. It is widely used as a feed for reflector antennas, as a standard gain antenna in EMC testing, and for general microwave radiation and measurement.
