A microstrip antenna, also known as a patch antenna, is a type of antenna known for its low profile, light weight, ease of fabrication, and low cost. Its basic structure consists of three layers: a metal radiating patch, a dielectric substrate, and a metal ground plane.
Its operating principle is based on resonance. When the patch is excited by a feed signal, an electromagnetic field resonates between the patch and the ground plane. Radiation occurs primarily from the two open edges (spaced about half a wavelength apart) of the patch, forming a directional beam.
The key advantages of this antenna are its flat profile, ease of integration into circuit boards, and suitability for forming arrays or achieving circular polarization. However, its main drawbacks are relatively narrow bandwidth, low to moderate gain, and limited power handling capacity. Microstrip antennas are widely used in modern wireless systems, such as mobile phones, GPS devices, Wi-Fi routers, and RFID tags.
